The Noonie Room Photos by my 5 year old grandson Jaylon Fields
Small and cozy. These three words means a lot when you're an independent producer. These attributes help the creative flow. Now I must admit, if given a vast budget for gear, I could really act a fool. I love gear. Still using stuff I got years ago, built a mic pre from an old Yamaha PM1000...still using Alesis monitors....it is a lot about what you get familiar with. You can never get enough mic pres or direct boxes. I use them as flavor for certain instruments. These flavors range from Manley, Hardy, PM1000.....to the new really reasonable Golden Age Pre-73. My direct boxes go from Avalon U5, Sadowsky,Countryman, to Sansamp. Have used for years and really like the high end Aphex dynamics control gear.....Compellor 320 & 320A and the Dominator.....and sometimes use a modified Aphex 651 Expressor and of course relative to dynamics I have the budget legend.....the RNC. I try not to use a lot of reverbs, but I will use an old Lexicon LXP-15II, Yamaha Rev500, the original TC Electronics M-1 and some of the reverb plugins. I am always looking for great budget microphones, and I have a few. Software is directly relative to the production. My rhythms are grooves and not a lot of really heavy drum accents and stuff. I will use various things....Ableton, Acid (been using since Acid 3), the Native Instruments Maschine 1.6, Pro Tools...or whatever I see that turns me on. I use various cool plugins(still use old UAD-1) and right now my main DAW is Pro Tools.....but I have worked in Nuendo and years back Cubase(worked with stand-a-lone digital recorders for years). My final mixes are analog summed through a custom setup to another computer via a Focusrite interface. I still work 24 bit 44.1, and thus I make my summed mixdown 24 bit 88.2 khz.
I track most of my music myself. Some people call me a bass player, but when I see the real ones I cannot call myself that. Bass is a primary instrument for me, it is my earliest stringed instrument, but I consider myself more a composer making music than a real nail it to the wall great musician. I can spot a great musician a mile off, and I really admire the greats.....local, regional, and international. For years I just wanted to do the technical part of production, but I didn't get much road use at this, so in 2004 I began producing my music. It always makes me feel good when someone really likes my music, for at heart, I am a conceptual thinking, gear-nut, music-making guy, not at all star material. This has a lot to do with why I am never seen live. And, for that matter, I stay pretty secluded from the main music community.....not because I dislike it, just that I have never really been a part of it. I really admire and love the community and I do what I do to try to contribute to the overall continuity of one of the greatest art-forms of our time.....and one of the most amazing sub-cultures of the 20th & 21st century.....Independent music production !!!!
